Waking up at 4 am isn’t the best feeling in the world. But as soon as you’re in the car on the way to the airport, the adrenaline kicks in and you can’t wait for the next few weeks. Our flight was delayed, but everything went well and we landed in Bilbao at ten to eleven. Our host families were waiting to pick us up and I don’t think I could hide how relieved I was that my first ten minutes in Spain had been so well.
After meeting my family, we went to a lookout point where you could see the sea. We walked down to the sea and then up to a church on a small islet called San Juan de Gaztelugatxe. It was quite exhausting to walk back up to the car park, but I loved the view.
After that, we went to a little village where we ate in a little restaurant and spent some time on the beach watching people surfing in the cold water.
Then we finally went home and I saw my home for the next few weeks. I think when you see your room and see it as your new home, that is the point where your doubts and stress fall away.
Before I went to bed I had dinner with my exchange student and I called my family to let them know I was okay. And let me tell you, going to bed, after getting up at four in the morning and having an exciting first day with your host family is really one of the best feelings.
